The Midwives Association of Florida represents licensed midwives (LMs) within Florida and beyond
For licensed midwives by strengthening midwifery practice through advocacy, education, and connection.
For student midwives by providing additional educational opportunities and resources.
For Florida families by ensuring that midwifery care remains a safe, available option for ALL Florida families.
Florida licensed midwives care for low-risk, healthy people and their babies throughout the childbearing year. The perfect combination of art and science, licensed midwives provide independent, comprehensive, holistic, personalized midwifery care from pre-conception to postpartum.
Florida midwifery students attend Florida approved schools, which offer a combined didactic and clinical education modeled after the European midwifery direct-entry model. All students must complete at least three years’ education, be highly skilled, and pass a national certification exam to become a Florida licensed midwife.
In Florida, licensed midwives are qualified health care providers who go through comprehensive training and examinations for certification and licensure. The term midwife reflects a philosophy of care; one that is more specifically directed to each client and their individual needs. One of the primary reasons that families elect to use a licensed midwife in their home or at a birthing center is to experience the childbirth process as naturally as possible. We offer a "Find a Midwife or Birth Center Directory" as a starting point in your search for a midwife to assist you during your pregnancy. Inclusion on this list indicates membership in Midwives Association of Florida.

Connection: MAF is a community of licensed midwives, retired licensed midwives, birth centers, and community members working together to create a vibrate midwifery community in Florida. We work together to create a positive collegial environment between midwives and other members to work to improve practice, the practice environment, and maternity care for Florida families.
Conferences: Our conferences are held every two years. They provide important CEU opportunities and networking for licensed midwives and other community and professional members. Conference discounts are a benefit of MAF Membership.
Public Policy / Advocacy: MAF works hard at the capitol to protect licensed midwifery from threats to practice and to find opportunities to improve care for Florida families. With the help of our professional lobbyists, we strive to stay abreast of any state legislative or policy changes that would impact practice and advocate for midwifery. MAF organizes midwife and consumer visits to legislators which helps build understanding of midwifery and its importance to our maternity care system and to Florida families.
Free Informational Services: The association keeps members in touch with each other and current issues through the association’s web site, online resources, and newsletter updates of emerging issues relevant to licensed midwifery.Read more
