MAF works in Tallahassee at the state capitol to advocate for licensed midwifery and quality maternity care for Florida families.
We are currently working on initiatives to implement a program, similar to Smooth Transitions, to improve transfers to the hospital from home and birth center care. Smooth Transitions is an initiative of the Foundation of Health Care Quality in Washington State and we will be building on their model for Florida. Learn more

Since 1979, groups of midwives and consumers have worked together in Florida to make licensed midwifery legal and improve access for consumers. |

The Midwifery Practice Act (Florida Statute 467) defines and protects the practice of licensed midwives.

In 2016, Florida Statue 467 (Midwifery Practice Act) became the target of proposed legislative changes.

It is only through advocacy and legislative lobbying that efforts to change the Midwifery Practice Act were stopped.

While LMs appreciate high levels of autonomy in practice, the protection of this autonomy does not come without work.

MAF remains committed to funding the lobbyists, staying abreast of changes to law and rule that would affect licensed midwifery practice, and ensuring access for all Florida families.
MAF Legislative Committee |
The MAF Legislative Committee works in concert with our lobbyists to build support in our state capitol for licensed midwifery and to fight threats to midwifery practice and quality care for Florida families. This work includes building support of legislators, making strategic connections and sharing information on the quality care provided by Florida's licensed midwives. The MAF Legislative committee organizes Lobby Days to bring licensed midwives and consumers to the capitol. The committee is composed of representatives of the MAF Executive Committee and MAF members. The committee meets regularly to direct the work in Tallahassee and make strategic plans for advocating for LMs in Florida.
